The Only Way Out Analyzing the Native American Suicide Epidemic They have had their land stolen from them. They have been victimized again and again by colonists. Today, they face deep systemic racism. Native Americans face unprecedented amounts of adversity that is resulting in a suicide epidemic. In this review, I present solid information on the reasons that a suicide epidemic is affecting the Native American community. Suicide and mental health are not often subjects that make headlines. However, Native Americans have been facing a silent mental health crisis for decades. The rate of suicide in Native American communities is disturbingly high compared to other races. Stigma, abuse, mental illness, and a lack of federal assistance are all factors that contribute to the alarming statistics. I will be looking at the various reasons for why the suicide rates are so high in these groups and what can be or has been done to combat this problem. I. The Rates of Suicide In certain groups, the suicide rate among Native American peoples is up to three times that of other races in the United States (Herne, Bartholomew and Weahkee 1). From 1999 to 2010, the CDC reports that the suicide rate increased 65.2% in Native American populations (2). This increase is the largest compared to other races (2). Native American youths under the age of 24 are over 3% more likely to take their own lives than their white counterparts (5). It is thought that caught by her father. Mayella blamed Tom of raping her and in shame coupled by the forceful coercion of her father guiltily testified against him. We should have the freedom to decide how we spend our last days. If they’re filled with pain, debilitation, and cause hardship on our loved ones, we should have the right to opt out. Others take the position that we didn’t choose our birth therefore our death isn’t ours to choose either. This has caused considerable debate as moral, ethical and legal ramifications come into the mix. This in turn has led to defining the process under two different terms for legal purposes.
